FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — One person is dead in a head-on crash on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal collision happened on February 6 at 12:30 p.m. on Interstate 77 near mile marker 33.
The collision involved two vehicles and happened about two miles north of Ridgeway.
According to the Fairfield County Coroner, Thomas Smith, 64, was the driver of one of the vehicles in the collision. He sustained injuries and was transported to Prisma Health Richland where he later died from injuries sustained in the collision.
A 2018 GMC truck was traveling south on I-77 when a Volkswagen Jetta Sedan, driven by Smith, traveling north, lost control and traveling across the median, hitting the GMC head-on.
The driver of the 2018 GMC truck was wearing a seat belt and was injured. The GMC had one passenger, who was also wearing a seat belt. The passenger was not injured.
The driver of the Volkswagon, Smith, is deceased. The driver was injured and entrapped in the vehicle. They were transported by EMS to an area hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The driver was wearing a seat belt.
