One dead in accident on I-77 near Ridgeway

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) Master Trooper Gary Miller reports an accident occurred early Friday morning on I-77 that left one person dead in Fairfield County.

The collision happened around 4:04 a.m. October 1 near mile marker 42, approximately 8 miles north of Ridgeway, South Carolina. The driver of a 2016 Acura MDX traveling south on I-77 went off the road, crossed the median and hit a tractor trailer traveling north head on.

The driver of the tractor trailer was wearing a seat belt and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

It is unknown if the driver of the Acura was wearing a seat belt as the driver was entrapped inside the vehicle and had to be mechanically extracted by EMS. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

SCHP is investigating the accident.
