Pedestrian killed in I-20 accident near Columbia

The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Saturday.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a pedestrian has died following an accident on I-20 near Columbia.

Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened around 5 a.m. in the area of the 71-mile marker of eastbound I-20 - roughly one mile north of Columbia.

Authorities said that a driver in a Honda Crosstour was heading east on the interstate when the unnamed southbound pedestrian attempted to cross the lanes.

The Honda struck the pedestrian, ultimately killing the victim. No details regarding the driver's condition were provided and the Highway Patrol hasn't suggested why the pedestrian may have been crossing the often-busy route in the pre-dawn hours.

The coroner's office will be in charge of releasing the victim's name. No pending charges were suggested in Tidwell's initial report.
