CAYCE, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left a pedestrian dead on a major interstate Friday morning.

According to Master Trooper David Jones, the crash happened around 7:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-26 near the I-77 northbound exit. According to Jones, a 2006 Chevrolet truck was heading west on I-26 when it collided with a pedestrian walking in the roadway. The pedestrian died from their injuries.

At this point, authorities haven't suggested why the pedestrian may have been on the road and are deferring to the Lexington County coroner's office for identification. There is no mention of charges in the initial description of the crash.

The Cayce Department of Public Safety assisted in handling traffic during the morning crash, which forced westbound motorists to be diverted onto I-77 North for a time.
