RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities with the Richland County Sheriff's Department confirm one person is dead after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday afternoon.

The sheriff's office announced late Saturday that it had arrested the alleged driver 64-year-old Carl Giles. Investigators said Giles left the roadway while driving in the area of Fairfield Road and Eisenhower Drive striking people who had gathered for an event.

One person, who the Richland County Coroner confirmed was 56-year-old Dr. Sonya Lewis of Blythewood, South Carolina, died at the scene. Two other people were also taken to the hospital for their injuries.

The sheriff's office said Giles continued driving down a nearby street but was chased by others from the group. Investigators also believe shots may have been fired at this time, though no one was apparently hit.

Deputies ultimately detained Giles and investigators were able to speak with him. After an hours-long investigation, the sheriff's office announced several charges against him including reckless vehicular homicide, hit and run resulting in death, hit and run resulting in great bodily injury, and hit and run resulting in minor personal injury.

While Giles is being taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, investigators believe there may have also been another person in the vehicle with him at the time of the crash. Anyone with information about the incident or that other person is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
