The incident began in Calhoun County, and ended near Irmo.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — A chase between deputies and a suspect ended in a car crash on Interstate 26 near Irmo Friday morning.

Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers says a pickup truck was stolen from the Pilot Truck Stop at mile marker 129 off Interstate 26.

The victim went up to a deputy who was circling around, who then caught up to the stolen truck and started pursuing.

The chase ended at the Piney Grove Exit off I-26 near Irmo. The vehicle hit another car, causing the truck to go off the road, where it crashed and flipped on its side.

The suspect was taken into custody. He's been identified 32-year-old John Edward Atkins of Spartanburg.

Two traffic lanes were blocked by law enforcement vehicles on I-26 as they evaluated the scene.
