FAA lifts ground stop on domestic flights; Columbia Metropolitan Airport experiencing some delays

All domestic takeoffs across the U.S. were delayed this morning as Federal Aviation Administration fixed a critical system

COLUMBIA, S.C. — At 9 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was telling airlines across the United States the pause in domestic takeoffs had been lifted. All flights had been delayed as the agency tried to get its Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system back online.

The NOTAM system provides pilots and air traffic controllers with live critical information, including changes in weather and conditions at a certain airport. The system went offline shortly before 11 p.m. Eastern Time.

Kim Crafton at Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) said the FAA reported the agency should be restoring the NOTAM system by 9:30 a.m.

In the meantime, flights in and out of Columbia Metropolitan Airport using the larger carriers -- American, Delta, and United airlines -- have been affected.

According to FlightAware.com, along the East Coast, major airports are coping with delays. As of 8:30 a.m.:

  • Charlotte/Douglas International was experiencing departure delays of 46 minutes and arrival delays of 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta was experiencing departure delays of 35 minutes
  • Newark (KEWR) had departure delays of just over an hour, and arrival delays averaging 1 hour and 10 minutes
  • Both JFK and LaGuardia in New York City were averaging departure delays of one hour

If you are unsure of the status of your flight and have not already downloaded your carrier's mobile app, you can check CAE's flight information at flycae.com.
