Crews remove victim from downed aircraft on Johns Island after crash

According to the FAA, the crash happened just before 1 p.m.

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. — Local and federal agencies are responding to a plane crash that happened in the South Carolina Lowcountry on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the crash was called in around 12:50 p.m. in a marsh near Johns Island in Charleston County.

The St. Johns Fire District reports that the crash happened in Abbapoola Creek near Stono River off Legareville Road. Details are still limited, but the FAA reports that the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-28.

Fire officials have since provided an update that there was only one person on board and that, hours later, they were able to remove the victim from the downed aircraft.

In addition to the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be involved and in charge of the investigation.

The FAA has not yet released the tail number of the aircraft involved.
