2.5 magnitude earthquake reported near Elgin Monday morning

The 8th earthquake in the area since Dec. 27, 2021

ELGIN, S.C. — The US Geological Survey confirmed a 2.5 magnitude earthquake centered 6K south-southeast of Elgin, South Carolina, at 5:49 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

Monday morning's quake is the eighth in the area since Dec. 27, 2021, and the second strongest. A small "swarm" of earthquakes began last Monday with a 3.3 magnitude 5K south-southwest of Elgin.

The earthquake originally registered as a 2.7 magnitude but was re-rated to a 2.5 magnitude around 6:45 a.m.
