COLUMBIA, S.C. — This morning at 5:37 am we officially transitioned to spring here in the northern hemisphere! The spring equinox is when there is equal daylight and nighttime at the equator. Here in South Carolina, we have just over 12 hours of daylight, but the transition to spring still signifies warming temperatures and days that continue to grow longer.

Unfortunately, we are starting spring off fairly chilly with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal. High temperatures this afternoon will be in the low to mid 50s. Average for this time of year is 69 degrees. Winds will also be breezy between 10 and 15 mph out of the northeast.

Clouds will also increase throughout the day with a coastal low just off the southeast coastline.

A few showers will move into the Low Country overnight and a stray shower cannot be ruled out of the far eastern Midlands, otherwise the rest of the area will remain dry.

Sunday morning will be cool with lows in the low 50s under mostly cloudy skies. We will remain cloudy and breezy with northeasterly winds, though afternoon temperatures will warm a bit more into the low 60s.

Overall, temperatures will warm into the work week. We will be in the low 70s by midweek and upper 70s towards the end of the week.

Tree pollen levels will also be high through Wednesday.

Moisture does increase midweek with a chance of some showers on Wednesday. As our next system moves through Thursday and Friday, more showers are expected with a few thunderstorms also possible.
