President approves State of Emergency for South Carolina

Federal assistance will be available for disaster relief efforts in areas of the state affected by the storm.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for the state of South Carolina due to Hurricane Ian. What this means is federal assistance will now be available to supplement local response efforts to emergency conditions resulting from the storm.

According to the order, the president's action "authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in all 46 South Carolina counties.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment, and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.  Emergency protective measures (Category B), including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program, will be provided at 75% federal funding."

Ian regained hurricane status after crossing Florida and heading back into the Atlantic Ocean. The storm is expected to dump about 3 to 8 inches of rain, causing flooding in some areas as it moves across South Carolina on Friday, Sept. 30.
