COLUMBIA, S.C. — We've got a dry and seasonable January weekend in South Carolina with cool but sunny weather in the forecast. After starting off quite chilly Saturday morning, sunshine will help temperatures climb into the low to mid 50s in the afternoon. Winds will be out of the northeast with an area of high pressure to our north.

Sunday will be fairly similar with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s and highs back in the mid 50s. The biggest difference will be increasing clouds, especially during the second half of the day as we track our next storm system moving east.

Some rain will return to the Midlands overnight Sunday into Monday morning as a warm front lifts north. Scattered showers are expected Monday, the heaviest north of the Columbia. There will be a break in the rain in the evening, before a second chance comes overnight into Tuesday morning as the cold front moves through.

Tuesday afternoon will be mostly sunny, dry, and warm with high temperatures approaching 70 degrees for the first time this month.

The dry break does not last long. Another system is forecast to move through our area on Wednesday through early Thursday, bringing more showers to the Southeast. Over the next week, models show an additional 1 to 1.5 inches in the Midlands, adding to our already abnormally rainy start to the new year.

Looking ahead to Friday, dry conditions are expected though temperatures will be below normal with highs only near 50 headed into next weekend.
