Chance Increases a Little for Tropical System in the Gulf

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The National Hurricane Center in Miami is watching an area in tropics for potential development.

An area of low pressure in currently in the Caribbean Sea. Environmental conditions are not expected to be good for tropical development over the short term.

Some gradual development with this system is possible later this week as the system moves north into the Gulf of Mexico. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is expected across parts of Cuba and Florida the next few days.

The hurricane center will issue another special tropical outlook for this system later tonight. Hurricane season officially begins June 1 and continues through November 30.

This year's hurricane name are: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie and William.
