COLUMBIA, S.C. — Potential Tropical Cyclone Three has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to bring drenching rains to the Gulf Coast, and perhaps South Carolina as well.

The National Hurricane Center Thursday began issuing advisories for the storm. It currently has maximum sustained winds of 30 miles an hour and is moving north and 9 miles an hour.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The warning extends from Intracoastal City, Louisiana, to the Alabama-Florida border.

If it becomes a tropical storm, it would be named Claudette

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say heavy rainfall and flooding will likely be the most significant hazard, with the storm reaching the coast beginning on Friday.

By the end of the weekend, the remains of the storm could be in South Carolina, where it dump several inches of rain. Right now, it's too early to project exactly how much rain, so people should continue to monitor the latest forecasts from News19 for the latest.

Meteorologists expect the 2021 season to be busy, but not as crazy as the record-breaking 2020 season.
