Mainly sunny today, rain returns to South Carolina Sunday

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Dry, breezy, and cooler temperatures are expected today. The clouds will increase across the area Saturday. Rain is likely Sunday. Some of the rainfall could be heavy at times. Dry conditions will return to the Midlands Monday.

Today will be mainly sunny and cooler than yesterday. Thursday, highs were in the lower to middle 70s. The Columbia Airport reported a high temperature of 74° Thursday. The record high for January 19th is 76 degrees.

There were a few showers across the Midlands Thursday, but there was not much measurable rainfall. Today and Saturday will be dry, but the chance for rain will increase for the second half of the weekend.

High temperatures today will be in the lower to middle 60s. This is still about 10° warmer than our average high temperature this time of the year. Skies will be partly cloudy tonight. Lows will drop into the middle 30s to lower 40s.

The clouds will increase Saturday ahead of our next weather system. Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 50s. Saturday is forecast to be dry, but rain will return to the state early Sunday morning.

Rain is likely through the day on Sunday. Heavy rainfall will be possible too. Localized flooding will be possible. Rainfall amounts are forecast to be up to 2 inches Sunday. A rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out, but the chances for thunderstorms will be small.

Temperatures Sunday will be in the lower 50s for Columbia. It may be a touch warmer in the southern half of the Midlands, but a little cooler in the northern half of the area.

Drier air moves in on Monday. Temperatures to start the workweek will be seasonable.
