Nice Sunday, rain chance returns overnight

A weak disturbance will bring a few showers across the Midlands Sunday night through early Monday afternoon.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sunday started off chilly with many locations across the Midlands dropping to near freezing.

Sunday afternoon will be similar to Saturday with mostly sunny skies and temperatures warming into the mid to upper 50s in the afternoon.

This weekend was the first dry weekend at Columbia Metropolitan Airport since the first weekend of December.

However, the dry spell will not last long. Later Sunday evening and overnight clouds will build as a weak disturbance approaches from the west. This disturbance will bring the chance for rain overnight Sunday into early afternoon on Monday.

Any showers will be very scattered in nature and will not bring a large amount of rain. Models indicate totals around a tenth of an inch or less across the Midlands through Monday afternoon.

Temperatures Monday will remain seasonable despite the cloudy conditions and scattered showers. Lows will be mild in the 40s with highs in the upper 50s.

Tuesday will dry out with much more sunshine across the area. Lows will drop into the 30s Tuesday morning, with highs once again back in the mid to upper 50s.

The next week will have an active pattern, with rain chances in the forecast every couple of days.

There is a small chance of rain Wednesday with mostly cloudy skies, while Thursday is forecast to be dry and sunny.

The next big system to head our way will bring rain late Friday afternoon into Sunday.

Temperatures for the middle and end of the week will be fairly similar. Morning lows will be in the upper 30s with highs in the upper 50s.
