UN's announces plan to reduce plastic pollution by 80% by 2040

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report provides a framework for governments, businesses, and individuals to reduce plastic pollution.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The United Nations has released a comprehensive roadmap aimed at reducing plastic pollution by 80% by 2040, emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and policy changes as key strategies.

One key aspect of the roadmap by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is promoting the circular economy approach. By adopting a sustainable model, we can move away from the traditional linear "take, make, dispose" model.

The report suggests three main market shifts:

  1. Reuse: This means encouraging reusable options such as refillable water bottles. This shift has the greatest potential to reduce up to 30% by 2040.

  2. Recycle: If society ensures recycling becomes a more stable and profitable venture, plastic pollution could be reduced by an additional 20 percent, the report finds.

  3. Reorient and diversify: By replacing plastic wrappers with alternatives, such as paper or compostable materials, pollution could be reduced by 17 percent.

By promoting recycling infrastructure, encouraging sustainable production practices, and incentivizing the use of recycled materials, the roadmap aims to create a closed-loop system that minimizes plastic waste. The UNEP states that this will result in 700,000 additional jobs and close to 1.3 trillion dollars in direct savings on public and private costs.

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste enter our oceans, rivers, and landfills, causing harm to marine life, ecosystems, and human health. The UN's roadmap to reduce plastic pollution by 80% by 2040 offers a beacon of hope in the fight against this global crisis.
