A 'Newbeary' sighting: Black bear seen wandering through SC city

Bear with us. A bear was spotted in "Newbeary" and we've bearly scratched the surface of all these unbearable puns!

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Bear with us. A bear was spotted in "Newbeary" and we've bearly scratched the surface of all these unbearable puns!

But seriously, Newberry County deputies sent out a Facebook alert Wednesday morning after a black bear was seen making it's was through Newberry.

The first spotting was on Highway 121 near US 76, then on Shortcut Road new Highway 34. Deputies say the bear is just passing through as it migrates to another region, and is probably just trying to forage some food.

And while bears are not typically aggressive, they are wild animals and can become dangerous when people invade their space. Remember, bears are big, but they can move quickly and climb easily.

The photo isn't worth the risk, and trying to feed the bear is never a good idea.

"Do not approach bears or allow them to approach you!" the Newberry County Sheriff's Office said.

If you do have a run-in with a bear, DON'T RUN, just back away slowly.
