'Even though they're on vacation, they're working really hard': Teachers working over the summer

A common misconception is that teachers have the summer off. These 150 teachers from LexRich District 5 are working hard this week for the Fall.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — About 150 teachers are gathered at Spring Hill High School this week to improve upon their teaching techniques.

District Five's director of magnet programs Sara Wheeler told us: “What we do every summer is have a summer workshop and what we do within those four days is combine professional development, on equity and diversity, as well as strategies that are proven to raise achievement for all students.”

“At the end of the day we all went into education because we are passionate about teaching and learning," says Leaphart Elementary Principal Courtney Sims, "and if we are going to be the best teachers and leaders that we can be, then we have to continue to be lifelong learners.”

"Here today we have teachers, even though they're on vacation, they're working really hard in order to learn more and more about instructional strategies," Dr. Donna Elam, speaker at the workshop told us.

Dr. Martin Cwiakala, instructor at The Center for Advanced Technical Studies told us, “I’m definitely enjoying what I’m learning and I’m excited to see how far we can go with this.”
