Timeline: when we'll see heavy rain Friday

Heavy rain is expected Friday which may change some plans.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia hasn't recorded a day with an inch or more of rainfall since September, but that may change Friday. Cold air will remain in place, but tropical moisture will feed showers into the Palmetto State throughout the day on Friday resulting in a cold rain.

Rain will start on Thursday evening in South Carolina and will likely push into the midlands around midnight. The heaviest rain will occur during the early part of Friday, but some pockets of heavy rain may pass through during the afternoon and evening as well. A few of the more intense downpours may bring rumbles of thunder, despite the cold temperatures.

Temperatures on Friday will hover between 40 and 50 degrees all day with a thick layer of clouds persisting in the area until Saturday. While showers are possible early on Saturday, the chance will decrease throughout the day. Temperatures will likely reach 60 on Saturday before the sun sets.

Here's a look at the storm's timeline:

The morning commute tomorrow could be messy. Temperatures will hover around 40 degrees with pockets of heavy rain. This storm is expected to be an all rain event because of the warm air higher in the atmosphere.

Temperatures hold steady in the 40s for most of the day with rounds of showers lingering into the evening commute. There may be a few breaks, but it will remain a damp and dreary day.

After sunset, there may be some breaks in the rain with temperatures in the 40s. On and off showers are expected through Friday night.

Rain will linger into early Saturday morning, but the chance for rain will decrease throughout the day with some sunshine expected.

In total, more than an inch of rain is expected, with locally 3-5 inches possible in parts of South Carolina. Exert extra caution during heavy downpours.
