Soda City Market favorite opens full restaurant downtown

A mix of Venezuelan and Spanish traditional foods comes to downtown Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Soda City Market favorite is now open as a full-time restaurant and brings a unique cultural flavor to Columbia.

Paella South opened its doors as Arepa South off Main and Hampton Streets Friday.

The story starts in Venezuela with a surgeon passionate about cooking. Pedro Figueredo founded Paella South in 2018, which quickly gained a following at the weekly Soda City Market held in downtown Columbia.

Now, with over 500 customers, the Figueredo family brings Arepa South to the Main Street District.

"We love cooking. We do this by heart and we really want everybody to know our food and our traditions and enjoy the experience," Owner Ana Figueredo said.

The Main Street District says Columbia's demand for diverse food options is increasing daily.

"We're just thrilled to be the destination that's really attracting these businesses because, let me tell you, the welcome mat is certainly out for you," Matt Kennell, president and CEO of Main Street District, said.

Arepa South will continue to serve their crowd's favorite paella but will now offer customers Arepas and other traditional Venezuelan dishes.

"We are trying to mix Venezuelan culture and American culture so everybody is welcome in this place," said Figueredo.

Although it is now open downtown, the restaurant tells us that customers can still find them every Saturday at the Soda City Market.

The restaurant is located at 1212 Hampton St. and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
