Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Thanksgiving is a little more than a week away and for one Sumter woman, it's a day she looks forward to every year.
Over the last 30 plus years, she's been helping those that don't have the chance to cook their own meal on Turkey Day.
With the right amount of seasoning, she’s doing exactly what she wants to do for Thanksgiving.
"Well I always liked cooking and feeding people anyhow," said Singleton.
This is just the beginning of what Thanksgiving looks like for her. She spends a lot of hours inside the kitchen at the Church of the Holy Comforter and inside her own home preparing the fifty turkeys and all the other parts of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. She cooks it all but it’s not for herself.
"Seniors that a lot of them don't have anybody to give them a good home cooked meal and some of them don't have people to visit them," explained Singleton.
The head chef has a lifetime of experience in the kitchen. For over thirty years she's been spending Thanksgiving helping feed the elderly in the town of Sumter.
"My little seniors be looking forward. They are calling me wanting to know when I'll be getting the dinner so I won't forget them. When they call, that just touches my heart," said Singleton.
Miss Singleton is 73-years-old and gets around well but just three weeks ago, Miss Singleton found herself in the hospital.
"I was real sick. I lost a lot of weight. Couldn't eat or whatever. I'm doing much better now. I didn't know if I was going to be able to do it or not but look at me now," laughed Singleton.
With the help from some volunteer, she helps feed over a thousand people each year. And she won't be slowing down anytime soon.
"I like to look for those that don't have anybody to give to them during the Thanksgiving holiday when people are sharing. That makes my Thanksgiving all by itself," said Singleton.
