Animal shelter hosts Carolina vs. Clemson donation drive

It's almost time for the Clemson vs. Carolina rivalry game! And a local animal shelter is combining the intense matchup with a heartwarming initiative.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia Animal Services is bringing the excitement of college football to a whole new field -- the field of giving -- in a unique way through its Carolina vs. Clemson donation drive.

"We thought this would be a really fun way, especially during football season, to kind of get our community involved in a donation drive by our two rival teams coming together," Victoria Riles, the superintendent of Columbia Animal Services, said.

Whether fans are cheering for the Tigers or the Gamecocks, the real winners are the shelter animals who will benefit from their kindness.

"Any donations that are coming into us are going to be utilized here in-house or given out to the community where needed," Riles said.

Food and cleaning supplies are always needed. Even used items like towels or bed sheets can be helpful donations for animal shelters. Items that might otherwise be thrown away find a new purpose here.

Columbia Animal Services has a Clemson bin and a Carolina bin to drop off donations.

"Right now, we do have a slight lead by the Clemson team," Riles said. "There is still plenty of time for our Carolina folks to help us catch up. We appreciate your donations no matter what your team is."

The drive continues until game day, Nov. 25.
