Catholic Diocese in Charleston Reaches Settlement Over Abuse

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston says it's reached an agreement on settling sexual abuse claims.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston says it's reached an agreement on settling sexual abuse claims. The diocese said Friday morning that a judge has given tentative approval to the agreement.Bishop Robert Baker says he hopes the settlement will help those who have been hurt by abuse. Baker says he deeply regrets the anguish of anyone who suffered childhood abuse by anyone connected with the church.A statement from the diocese this morning says the settlement provides help for two groups of people. The first is for those born before August 31st, 1980, who were abused while minors by anyone connected with the Diocese of Charleston, which is responsible for all of South Carolina.The statement says the second group of people covered by the settlement is for spouses and parents of those who were abused. Five million dollars is being committed to the settlement, with an additional seven million dollars possible.
