Kershaw County shooting leads to arrest of man accused of killing brother

The suspect said the shooting began with an argument and a struggle over a gun.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — A Kershaw County man has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of his brother on Wednesday night.

Authorities said the call occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Grey Fox Road in the Lugoff area. According to the report, responding deputies found a quiet scene, though the dispatch said they heard an argument in the background when the incident was first called in.

However, they made contact with 58-year-old Jimmy Lee Murphy as he approached from nearby with his hands up. Murphy led deputies in and described what allegedly happened. During their time in the home, deputies spotted the deceased, Mack Murry Murphy, lying on the floor of a bedroom dead.

According to the report, deputies brought the surviving brother outside and asked additional questions.

Jimmy said Mack came to his room to complain of the bathroom light being left on and that Mack had a gun when he opened the door. The suspect said the two struggled over the gun, which went off multiple times. One of the bullets hit Mack in the chest, Jimmy said.

Evidence and the suspect's interview at the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office led deputies to charge Jimmy Lee Murphy with murder. He's now being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center.
