RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — One inmate is in the hospital after an incident at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center that happened while a guard was allegedly not in the dorm.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to the Richland County jail regarding an assault with a weapon. The department said the deputies arrived to find a male inmate lying on the floor, surrounded by guards and medical staff. Authorities said he was beaten in the head and stabbed multiple times in the torso. The inmate was taken to an area hospital for treatment, and two other inmates were wounded attempting to break up the incident. One had a cut to the hand, and the other suffered a bruised knee.

According to the sheriff's department, the guard had left the dorm to get supplies for another inmate, so there was no guard in the dorm when the attack happened.

The sheriff's department added that the items used to cut the victim have not been recovered, and investigators are still trying to confirm the identity of everyone involved in the incident.
