Richland County deputies arrest 2 in Friday morning murder investigation

Both men were arrested Friday afternoon, just hours after the shooting occurred.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities arrested two men after a deadly shooting early Friday morning in Richland County.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, 56-year-old Michael Reed and 41-year-old Travis Thomas were arrested on Friday afternoon for a death that occurred earlier the same day around 9 a.m. Deputies were initially called to the area of South Chelsea Road about a shooting but arrived to find the victim sitting unresponsive on the ground. He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Reed and Thomas were charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Sheriff Leon Lott said in a statement that, while the department cannot always stop a murder from occurring, it works to bring justice quickly and make arrests.

"This murder occurred yesterday morning, and by last night, we had made two arrests, even as far away as Florida," Sheriff Lott said. "Quick arrests help start the healing process for the victim's families, friends, and the community."

The sheriff's department said it continues working to end violence in the community and hold those responsible accountable for their crimes.

"As I have said before, we will get you," Lott said.
