RIDGEVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina prisoner already serving a two-decade sentence is now facing an attempted murder charge, among others, following an incident that happened years earlier.
According to the South Carolina Department of Corrections, the incident happened at Lieber Correctional Institution in 2021. According to a statement and warrants provided by the agency, 35-year-old Dameion Rivers attempted to stab a corrections officer with a shank, an improvised knife, while threatening to kill him and spitting in his face. Warrants state the officer was attempting to confiscate a contraband cell phone.
Rivers is serving a 19-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter and firearms possession. He now faces additional charges of attempted murder, threatening the life of a public official, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a weapon by an inmate and throwing bodily fluids.
