Sumter woman killed in domestic violence incident, police say

44-year-old suspect in custody, charged with murder, after Tuesday morning event

SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter Police have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection to a domestic violence incident that left a woman dead early Tuesday morning.

According to reports, Sumter Police officers were called to the Downtown Sumter Motor Inn, 409 N Main St., at 1:20 a.m. Jan. 28, 2020.

Ebony Elizabeth Canty, 35, of Sumter, was found dead at the scene with visible injuries to the upper body.

Freddie Ladale Curtis, 44, also of Sumter, was at the scene and taken into custody. Canty and Curtis had been in a relationship.

Curtis is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

An autopsy of Canty is scheduled of Wednesday in Charleston.

This is an ongoing investigation.
