Tampa police: Man shot, killed after pointing fake gun at someone

The shooter remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to police.

TAMPA, Fla. — Police say a man was shot and killed after he pointed a fake gun at another man late Thursday in Tampa.

It happened just before 11:30 p.m. on North Hamner Avenue near West Wood Street

According to the Tampa Police Department, a man in his mid-20s was sitting in a car in his friend's driveway when a man in his late 30s parked his car on the street.

The man in his 20s reportedly told police that the older man got out of the car, put a gun in his waistband and began knocking on the younger man's car window, prompting him to roll it down.

That's when, according to investigators, the older man yelled something unknown and raised the gun toward the younger man in the car. For fear he was going to get shot, the younger man pulled out his own gun and fired, the police department wrote.

When officers arrived, they said the older man had gunshot wounds to his upper body. Police rendered aid while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say they later determined that the older man's gun was fake.

Everyone involved in the shooting remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Charges are being reviewed.

Police said there is no continuing threat to the public, as this was not a random act.

Further details are expected to be released as they become available.
