Inmate killed in fight at South Carolina prison

The inmate was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An inmate at a South Carolina prison is dead following a fight inside a cell.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services said Monday that Carl Andrew Pollen Jr. around 3 a.m. Monday.

Pollen was an inmate at Perry Correctional Institution in the town of Pelzer in the Upstate. Officers say he got into a fight with a fellow inmate. 

He died an hour after being injured.

SC prisons records show Pollen was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction out of Horry County, and had been behind bars since 2012.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division and the prisons police continue to investigate.
