BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Developers want to put 400 homes along a stretch of land by the Scout Motors plant.
Jack Lanier said he enjoys living out along Mount Valley Road in a rural part of Blythewood.
"It's country living, I wanted to move out to the country and get a pond, which I got."
He lives across from a property developers recently bought from Mungo Homes.
According to the company, they just finalized the sale worth $2 million, which would turn 262 acres into residential land. A Mungo Homes spokesperson said they want to put 400 single-family homes on the property, including a pool and cabana. The property sits five miles from the upcoming Scout Motors project site in Blythewood.
The news has Lanier worried the rural charm of his street might be a thing of the past.
"The biggest thing we're worried about is our roads and schools. We don't have the roads that going to handle all those people, cars," he adds, "If the traffic is on the road, it's not nearly as safe."
Down the street, Matthew Jordan Smith said he's also been following the development news.
"Everybody first thinks, 'Oh, we don't want things to change,'" he said. "But change is always inevitable, and I think it also could bring some good things."
He's hopeful more projects in the area will lead to investments in infrastructure.
"It would greatly improve internet service. We have really one option out here now, and it sucks, so to have more service, more homes, it would have to improve," Smith adds, "neighbors would be nice, more neighbors would be nice, so I see it as a good things."
Mungo Homes did not give a timeline for when the project would begin construction.
