Coroner called to scene of early morning fire in St. Andrews community

A firefighter also sustained minor injuries, police said.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The coroner has joined the investigation of a fire that burned a St. Andrews area home on Thursday morning.

Columbia-Richland Fire and Irmo Fire District responded to Dunmore Court off Kay Street and St. Andrews Road around 2 a.m. Fire officials said crews saw flames while heading to the scene. Upon arrival, crews said they found a duplex burning on one side of the second floor and through the roof.

Crews from both departments entered the home and the second floor, which they said was burning heavily. Columbia Fire said their crews found someone on the floor. The department referred News19 to the coroner's office for additional information about that person and confirmed the coroner did respond to the location.

Fire officials said a firefighter also sustained minor injuries at the scene. The fire was eventually brought under control, and the Richland County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.

The American Red Cross is assisting the people living on the other side of the duplex. Columbia Fire said they made it out of the home safely.
