Just in time for strawberry season, Cottle Farm has a new home

Even nestled in its new location, a developer reached out to see if they would sell, but the strawberry farmers say they are here to stay.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Cottle Farms, known for their locally grown strawberries, has found a new home.

Hunter Bulloch is Cottle Farms' co-owner alongside his mother, Joy Cottle.

"This is kind of been our dream and as some would say, some dreams aren't for sale," Hunter said.

After they decided to move their 61-year-old farm to the former Sedgewood Country Club on U.S. Highway 76/378, someone else wanted that land and made them an offer.

"Originally, this was always going to be a larger farm. Then, out of the blue, a contractor contacted my mom and made her a very good offer, and it was tempting for her to take it," Hunter said.

A contractor wanted to buy the land and build homes on the 182-acre site, but the mother and son turned down that offer—and Richland County resident Colleen Cather said she is glad they did.

"I'm thrilled that they instead invested in the community and offered us an expanded play place to come and enjoy sweet summer moments with our family," Colleen said.

With the farm's new location being five times larger than the old property, Hunter hopes families enjoy the farm's latest additions.

"Hayrides, we have three different antique trailers we have fixed up; we are going to have so many different types of photo ops, antique tractors that will drive people around, barrel rides," Hunter said.

With those new additions now in place, Colleen plans to bring her son Roman to the farm to pick strawberries and enjoy the fun.

"I'm looking forward to seeing him grow up on this farm and have years of memories there," Colleen said.

Cottle Farm will open at the new location by the end of March if the weather cooperates.
