LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lexington County Sheriff's deputies say a man was killed in a car crash during a pursuit with a law enforcement officer.

The incident happened back on April 14 and involved a suspect, 20-year-old Dwayne Afonso Reed Jr., and a South Carolina Bureau of Protective Services officer. SCBPS is a division of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The collision happened at Longs Pond Road near Roscoe Road, which is just off Interstate 20 near the 51 mile marker.

“Reed was pronounced dead at the scene and was still in the vehicle when deputies arrived,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a statement. “Reed initiated a pursuit with the DPS officer when he refused to stop for the officer, who had turned on his blue lights and siren, on I-20 just before the Longs Pond Road exit.”

The sheriff's department said the officer was trying to stop Reed from speeding and reckless driving.

“All the preliminary information we’ve gathered indicates Reed’s car was traveling at a very high rate of speed when he lost control and drove off the right side of the road and struck two trees,” Koon said.

Reed was the only person in his vehicle.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department said since the pursuit involved a South Carolina Department of Public Safety officer, the sheriff's department was requested to investigate the matter.
