Feel called to serve your community? Six Columbia commissions seek applicants

COLUMBIA, S.C. — For those civic minded individuals who are looking for ways to serve, the City of Columbia has openings on several boards and commissions.

Find what best suits your interest and apply before 5 p.m. Thursday, June 27. Terms range between 2 to 6 years, depending on the commission. Here are the openings:

City Center Partnership: 1 (appointed) opening, 3 year term

This board's purpose is to enhance the economic vitality of Columbia's City center Business Improvement District (BID) by making capital investments and expanding services and programs withing and for the District through special assessment revenues and other revenues as may be appropriate. This large board has a minimum of 25 directors, with the City appointing 3 individuals

Columbia Museum of Art: 1 opening, 5 year term

Applicant MUST live within city's corporate limits. The Columbia Museum of Art Commission manages the investments and maintenance, preservation and exhibition of its art collection

Design/Development Review Commission (DDRC): 1 opening, 3 year term

The DDRC reviews and approves work proposed within the City's historic districts, urban design areas, and upon designated landmarks. Applicant must have experience as a City Planner.

Election Commission: 1 opening, 6 year term

The Municipal Election Commission determines the eligibility of candidates seeking office; counts and verifies absentee ballots to ensure the integrity of the election process in accordance to state statute; and certifies results of all municipal elections. Applicants must reside within City limits.

Food Policy Committee: 4 applicants, 2 year terms

This committee gathers information about the problems found within the cycle of food production, consumption, processing, distribution, and waste disposal with the primary focus on finding solutions to problems that promote sustainability, economic development, and social justice in the food system of Columbia and surrounding areas. Through research, fostering cooperation among private, public and non-profit interests, and education of government officials about issues in the food system, the committee makes policy recommendations to City Council. The Council has the final vote on approval of recommendations.

Property Maintenance Board of Appeals (PMBoA): 7 openings, 3 year terms

This volunteer group was established for the purpose of heating appeals to decisions made by Columbia Housing officials or to a notice of violation of the International Property Maintenance Code. Applicants must reside within the corporate limits of the City of Columbia.
