TROY, N.C. — North Carolina National Forests officials are encouraging visitors to use extra caution after a recent coyote attack.
Two people had minor injuries after the attack on April 27 and officials are calling it an "isolated incident."
It happened on Uwharrie Trail near Big Island Creek in the Uwharrie National Forest. That is east of Charlotte.
Forest Service and state officials are working together to find the coyote involved.
The agency said encountering coyotes and other wildlife "can be a common occurrence when visiting the Uwharrie National Forest, and the results can be unpredictable."
It notes for personal safety and for the protection of wildlife, visitors should follow these steps:
- Contact the district ranger’s office or visit the National Forests in North Carolina’s webpage for the latest alerts and safety information.
- Never approach any wildlife. If an animal appears to be hurt, contact the district ranger’s office or county animal control.
- When camping, make sure to secure all food and trash to avoid attracting animals.
- Prepare food at least 100 yards away from sleeping areas.
- If you are attacked by an animal, seek immediate medical attention.
