Increased security around Williams-Brice Stadium ahead of Trump's visit

While fans gear up for the celebration, law enforcement is taking measures to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the highly anticipated Palmetto Bowl approaches, law enforcement agencies are intensifying preparations to ensure a secure environment for the clash between rivals Clemson and the University of South Carolina.

The Palmetto Bowl, regarded as the most significant football game in the state, is set to draw thousands to Columbia this Saturday, including former President Donald Trump.

The Gresham family, busy setting up for a day of tailgating, shared their enthusiasm, saying, "We're getting set up, getting ready for a full day of tailgating tomorrow and hopefully a Gamecock victory."

Acknowledging the potential traffic challenges, Lisa Clark remained optimistic, stating, "Traffic may be a nightmare tomorrow, but we're excited that he's gonna be here, and I think it's great."

While fans gear up for the celebration, law enforcement is taking measures to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

"We definitely would like to see our fans pack their patience. Starting as early as 2 o'clock they'll see some traffic patterns being set up in the Assembly Street corridor and Gervais Street corridor of officers directing traffic," said Columbia Deputy Chief Melron Kelly.

Kelly urged fans not to be alarmed by the increased police presence on Saturday and to take advantage of COMET and shuttle buses when available.

"You will see a heightened sense of security, however, it will look like a normal game day but we expect a sold-out crowd, 80,000 plus folks," Deputy Chief Kelly stated.

In coordination with the event, the University of South Carolina announced that all parking lots would open early at 1:30 p.m., allowing fans more time to reach their designated parking spots.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:39 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, with the game broadcast on the SEC Network.
