Coroner identifies 13-year-old boy killed in Orangeburg hunting accident, officials say

The boy was squirrel hunting, according to officials.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — The Orangeburg County Coroner has identified a 13-year-old killed in a hunting accident over the weekend.

Coroner Samuetta Marshall said late Monday afternoon that the child who died was 13-year-old Cameron Conner.

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the incident happened Sunday afternoon on private land in the county.  The coroner later clarified the death happened near a home on Bonner Avenue in Santee.

Details are limited, but SCDNR officers said their initial information is Conner and a friend were squirrel hunting when one shot the other. Additional details on what led up to the accident and what happened afterward were not immediately available.

The Department of Natural Resources said they will provide updates when they are able to.

"Our thoughts are with the boy's family and loved ones," SCDNR said in a statement.

Dorchester Academy, where Conner was an eighth grader, issued a statement as well.

"Cameron was a beloved brother and son, and a friend to so many," the school wrote on social media. "He was a member of the Raider football team and baseball team. Please keep Cameron's family and our school family in your thoughts and prayers."

This is the second hunting death involving a child in Orangeburg County in the last few months. Back in November, six-year-old Avery Davis died when he was shot accidentally while hunting near the Calhoun-Orangeburg County border.
