SC's Sparkleberry Country Fair ends after 23-year run

On February 21, the fair said it was hoping to be back in 2020, but has now made the decision to discontinue the fair.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 23-year tradition in Northeast Columbia has come to an end.

The Sparkleberry Country Fair posted to their Facebook page letting families know there will not be another fair.

Originally, the fair  canceled this year's event after they could not find a suitable location after their usual location became unavailable.

The fair was held at Clemson's Sandhill Research and Education Center until it was announced in November 2018 that the Sandhill REC had changed its mission and the fair no longer fit within that mission.

On February 21, the fair said it was hoping to be back in 2020, but on April 13 made the decision to discontinue the fair.

The board says they could not find a location that met the minimum requirements needed to safely operate the fair.

The Sparkleberry Country Fair has been held annually on the last Saturday of April since 1995.

"We had a great run over the past 23 years," said Fair Chairman Bill McCracken.

He says the fair had raised more than $900,000 for the Richland Two School District.

The Class of 2019 scholarship recipients will be the last for the fair and any remaining funds will be donated to the Richland Two Foundation.
