LUGOFF, S.C. — The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported an earthquake in South Carolina early Tuesday morning.

The 1.74 magnitude earthquake, which was about a mile deep, was centered about 4.0 miles south of Lugoff in Kershaw County. This is the same area that has experienced earthquake swarms over the past couple of years.

South Carolina has a history of minor earthquake activity.

The largest and most damaging earthquake on record is the 1886 Charleston earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.3. That quake, felt from New York to Cuba, killed at least 60 people and damaged thousands of buildings.
