Statue in the Works for A'ja Wilson at USC

USC President Harris Pastides made the announcement after graduates unanimously voted in favor of the statue during the ceremony Saturday morning.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - This graduation ceremony is ending a bit differently for one University of South Carolina alumna.

A'ja Wilson is not only walking out with a diploma, but with a promise of a statue to be erected in her honor on campus grounds.

USC President Harris Pastides made the announcement after graduates unanimously voted in favor of the statue during the ceremony Saturday morning.

Earlier this month, Rep. Leon Howard (D-Columbia) filed a resolution to have a monument to the women’s basketball player on State House grounds.

A three-time All-American, and the first National Player of the Year in program history, Wilson also set school records in multiple statistical categories, leading the team to the 2017 National Championship.

Last month, she was drafted by the Las Vegas Aces as the WNBA Draft top pick.
