Federal government to close for George H.W. Bush National Day of Mourning

President Donald Trump declared Wednesday Dec. 5 as a National Day of Mourning following the passing of the 41st president

It will essentially be a federal holiday across America as the country pauses to remember President George H.W. Bush.

President Donald Trump declared Wednesday Dec. 5 as a National Day of Mourning following the passing of the 41st president last Friday. Bush died at 94 years old, just less than one year after the death of his beloved wife, Barbra Bush.

The last time the U.S. government declared a Day of Mourning for a deceased president was back in 2007 for Gerald Ford, which was the most recent president to pass way.

A Day of Mourning is designed to bring the country together in order to honor the president's legacy.

There are some closures that you need to know:

  • U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail and all post offices will be closed. Limited package delivery will continue.
  • The New York Stock Exchange and Nadaq will close.
  • All federal offices will close and most federal employees will be excused from work.
  • The Supreme Court will postpone all arguments for the day. The House has canceled all votes for the week and the Senate has postponed votes until after the funeral.
