A lasting legacy: Town of Irmo pays tribute to firefighter James Muller and all first responders

"We need to honor everyone and if we’re going to do that, we need to honor firefighter Muller specifically on this monument," Irmo Mayor Bill Danielson said.

IRMO, S.C. — Just days after the one-year anniversary of Irmo firefighter James Muller's passing, the Town of Irmo plans to unveil a first responders memorial to honor him and other fallen first responders.

According to Mayor Bill Danielson, it will be revealed in a public ceremony on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Irmo Town Park, near the police department.

The mayor said contractors put the final touches on the monument Thursday, with the granite coming from India. He said the monument was constructed about a week ago, with contractors from Georgia working 12 to 14 hours on it Friday to get it finished and delivered on time.

Danielson said that the monument will have four sides for police, fire, emergency medical services, and town employees.

"After firefighter Muller passed, we looked around the fire chief, police chief, our town administrator, the town council, we all looked around and said we need to do something," Danielson said. "We need to honor everyone, and if we're going to do that, we need to honor firefighter Muller specifically on this monument."

The mayor said this is a quiet place for reflection that locals can visit from sunrise to sunset.

"It’ll be a great place for people to just locally -- in Irmo -- just come to think about the people who have served, in the past and presently," Danielson said.
