After 12 years, North, SC gets a grocery store

After the town's Piggly Wiggly closed its doors over a decade ago, there hasn't been a dedicated grocery store.

NORTH, S.C. — After 12 years, the town of North has welcomed a new grocery store.

My R.W. Grocery Store is located in the heart of North, and residents are excited about the affordable prices in town.

April Phillips lives in Neeses and says affordable groceries are hard to find.

“Even the local gas stations is outrageous at times,” said Phillips. “But they’re making it affordable for everyone and all, and that means a lot to North and Neeses area. And I am from the Neeses area, but I will come here again and again.”

Candice Stone, who works at the police department in North, said the town sees a lot of traffic.

“It’s a hidden gem I think,” said Stone. “Hopefully people will stop in maybe on their way down to Charleston they’re just cutting through they need a snack they need something to eat, they need a break. Stretch your legs walk through.”

Stone says the produce is fresh, something she doesn’t see a lot in town.

“We don’t have a lot here; we have a Family Dollar; we have the Dollar General as well," Stone said. "But when you go in and you look at their produce, it’s not that great. Our next option is we have to go twenty minutes down the road to a big grocery store, so it’s nice having something here where we don’t have to travel far.”

Wilson Morales owns My RW Grocery Store, he says he was concerned at first but the community welcomed him with open arms.

“Everybody is excited; they say they haven’t had a grocery store for a long time, and they are really happy, and we were scared when we started because we have a lot of Hispanic products, and we said, 'Oh, I don’t know if they won’t like it,” said Morales. “But I see everybody is liking, everybody is happy, and everybody is excited and say welcome to North.”

Jeff Washington, the mayor of North, said this means a lot to the residents.

“This is going to mean a whole lot to the town of North and everybody is so happy and proud of what just came to North and the road doesn’t stop,” said Washington.

One of the next things Mayor Washington said they are planning on bringing to the town is a laundromat for the residents.
