SCDOT proposes roundabout to improve safety at high-risk Orangeburg County intersection

SCDOT held a public information session with residents in the Town of Neeses to get feedback from residents.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Transportation hosted a meeting to find ways to make some of Orangeburg County's roads safer as work continues with various intersection improvement projects.

One of those is where the John Nunn Highway and Salley Road meet. The agency said they might convert the intersection into a roundabout.

Hannah Robinson is the media relations coordinator for SCDOT. She says these meetings are important.

“This project is in the design phase, so it’s not set in stone. So again, that’s why we have these meetings - to hear from the public any kind of concerns they may have for the design. So people can come out and tell us exactly how they feel,” said Robinson. “We’ll answer any questions and concerns they may have.”

This location was chosen through the Highway Safety Improvement Program because it’s had many crashes.

Robinson said this would help lower accidents.

“In a traditional four-leg intersection like there is right now, there’s 32 points of conflict where you can get in a crash, and then when you have a roundabout there’s only eight," said Robinson. "So this is drastically improving the safety of the intersection if this is the plan that we go with.”

The project will feature a new slower speed limit. Construction is expected to begin in the fall 2025. Comments from the public are being accepted until June 7.
