Residents chime in as Summerton holds special election

The Summerton mayoral and town council special election is being held on Tuesday.

SUMMERTON, S.C. — In January the town of Summerton lost their mayor, Tony Junious to a fatal car accident.

Now, the town is holding a special election on Tuesday.

Mac Bagnal and Timothy Fry are both running for the mayoral position in town.

Alice Wearing, who lives in Summerton, said some upgraded curb appeal would make a difference.

“I would like to see the entire community, actually, with beautiful trees where its more walkable,” said Wearing. “Where people can really enjoy walking through the community because it is a very attractive community.”

Gretchen Floyd, who recently moved to Summerton, is opening a business, Firm Foundations Pediatric Therapy will, in town.

“There’s such great families, and it is such an amazing close-knit community,” said Floyd. “I think there is so much potential.”

Floyd’s business will be located on Main Street, and she said she would like to see more business open up around hers.

“There are so many empty buildings that have such good potential, and I would just love to see restaurants, cute shops come to the downtown area to bring people to this,” said Floyd. “I mean, it’s such a cute town, and there really is a lot to offer with the lake and driving distance to some big cities, so I just would love just to revitalize our downtown Main Street.”

Wearing said it is important for residents in town to show up and vote.

“I certainly would like to see people get out and take pride in voting because it’s very very important,” said Wearing. “The leaders in community make decisions that impacts all of our lives in the community, so people need to be aware and understand how government, particularly local government, impacts their lives positively or negatively.”

Polls close April 2nd at 7 pm.
