Man dies after shooting outside Sumter convenience store; search underway for killer

The shooting is under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

SUMTER, S.C. — A report of gunfire at a Sumter convenience store led officers to a wounded man who later died. Now, they're searching for his killer.

The Sumter Police Department said officers responded to a "shots fired" call to the parking lot of the Red Bay Store just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers found 20-year-old Ray'Quan Dontrell Lamont Durant shot in the parking lot. Emergency responders took him to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he died. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police are determining what preceded the shooting and trying to identify the shooter.
