Pedestrian killed in crash involving Sumter County patrol vehicle identified

The crash happened early Friday morning on U.S. Hwy. 521,

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a pedestrian has died along a Sumter County highway after being struck by a patrol vehicle before dawn on Friday.

Master Trooper William Bennett with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. on U.S. 521 (Camden Highway) near Beckwood Road. 

Bennett said a 2015 Dodge Charger registered with Sumter County was heading north on the highway when it collided with a pedestrian heading east. The pedestrian, identified by the Sumter County Coroner's Office as 34-year-old Michael Young of Sumter, died at the scene of the crash.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office confirmed the crash involved a deputy driving a patrol vehicle.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
