Rembert residents react to body found in tarp

Sunday morning, hunters in Sumter discovered a dead body wrapped in a tarp. Now, investigators say they are working to identify this person.

REMBERT, S.C. — In the quiet town of Rembert, residents say the only thing that bothers them is the occasional loud car going by it's pretty quiet here.

However, after a group of six hunters discovered a dead body wrapped in a tarp on Sunday, residents like Carey Cook say they are shaken up.

Cook says the hunting grounds where the discovery was made, belong to his son. The 50 acres of land are just walking distance down the road from the family's home.

"It gets you kind of scared you know. We can't control who comes out here but the people who live here are all law-abiding peaceful people," Cook explained.

The hunters who found the person's body Sunday called law enforcement immediately. When deputies got there they were only 30 feet from the road when they saw the body.

Gary Capers says he got a call from his mother who lives in the neighborhood as soon as the lights and sirens filled the street.

"We got down here and it was almost like you were watching some unsolved mystery on TV or something. All of the cop cars, the road blocked off, and everything, and right then my heart dropped because like I said, my mom was out here alone. I mean it's right near her house within a hundred yards of my mom's house, and we were here until they took the body out of the woods and stuff like that," Capers said.

Dr. Mark Bordeaux with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office says investigators could not identify the person's gender, age, or race because of the condition their body was found in.

The sheriff's office believes DNA testing may need to be done by SLED before any identity is named.

Dr. Bordeax says investigators have also already gone through their most current list of missing people, and say none of their timelines for going missing seem to match up with this person.

"We don't believe that this is the body of a missing person from Sumter, South Carolina because during the estimated time frame that we were able to determine from the discovery of this body, and the estimated time frame that people are looking at the possibility of their death, there have been no new reports of any missing individuals,"

Sumter County investigators do suspect foul play in this situation and are asking anyone who may have information to call the Sumter County Sheriff's Office or use the P3 Tips service to make an anonymous report.
